Overview
Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol (C7H8O) used as both a pharmaceutical excipient and an active ingredient. As a drug, it acts as an antiparasitic agent for the topical treatment of head lice in adults and children 6 months of age and older. Its mechanism involves suffocating lice by obstructing their spiracles (respiratory openings), rather than neurotoxicity or enzymatic inhibition. Benzyl alcohol is also widely used as a preservative in injectable medications due to its antimicrobial properties. In industry and perfumery it serves as a solvent and fragrance component. Naturally occurring in many plants and essential oils, benzyl alcohol is generally considered safe but can be toxic to neonates at high concentrations due to immature metabolism[1][2][3][4][5].
