Overview

Benzylamine is an organic compound with the formula C6H5CH2NH2, also known as phenylmethylamine. It belongs to the class of organic compounds called phenylmethylamines. Benzylamine has been found in some plants and is used experimentally in research settings. Pharmacologically, it acts as a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), inhibiting both monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A) and monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B). Some derivatives of benzylamine, such as pargyline, have been developed and used pharmaceutically for conditions like hypertension and depression due to their MAOI activity. Benzylamine itself has shown potential antihyperglycemic effects in animal studies by facilitating glucose utilization in peripheral tissues and improving glucose tolerance without affecting insulin secretion or causing adverse metabolic effects[4][5]. The hydrochloride salt form has been used historically for motion sickness.
