Benzylmorphine is a semi-synthetic opioid and the benzyl ether derivative of morphine. It was introduced to the international market in 1897 and used primarily as a moderate-strength analgesic and cough suppressant. Benzylmorphine acts similarly to codeine and ethylmorphine but is about 90% as potent as codeine by weight. Its mechanism of action is through agonism at the mu-opioid receptor (opioid receptor), leading to analgesic and antitussive effects. Benzylmorphine was formerly used for pain relief (including in eye surgery) and cough suppression but fell out of favor due to the availability of other opiates such as hydrocodone and codeine. It is now classified as a Schedule I controlled substance in the United States with no accepted medical use[1][2][5].
