Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Benzylparaben is a synthetic compound belonging to the paraben family, which are esters of para-hydroxybenzoic acid and an alcohol. It is primarily used as a preservative agent in cosmetics, food, and pharmaceutical products due to its antimicrobial properties. Benzylparaben has also been used in allergenic testing as a standardized chemical allergen. Its physiologic effect includes increased histamine release and cell-mediated immunity. Structurally, it is known to fit into the agonist pocket of human estrogen receptor alpha (hERα), suggesting potential endocrine-disrupting activity[1][2][3][4]. However, its use has declined due to concerns about allergic reactions and possible health effects[7].
