Benzylpenicillin, also known as penicillin G, is a natural beta-lactam antibiotic used primarily to treat infections caused by gram-positive cocci, especially streptococcal infections. It is administered intravenously or intramuscularly due to poor oral absorption. Benzylpenicillin acts by binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall, inhibiting the final stage of cell wall synthesis and leading to bacterial lysis through autolytic enzymes. It is indicated for a wide range of serious infections including pneumonia, strep throat, syphilis, necrotizing enterocolitis, diphtheria, gas gangrene, leptospirosis, cellulitis, tetanus and more. Benzylpenicillin is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines[2][3][8].
