benzylpenicillin + netilmicin

This is a combination of two antibiotics, benzylpenicillin (also known as penicillin G) and netilmicin. Benzylpenicillin is a natural penicillin antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, making it bactericidal against susceptible gram-positive cocci and some gram-negative organisms. Netilmicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, also resulting in bactericidal activity. The combination is used for its synergistic effect, particularly against enterococci (e.g., Enterococcus faecalis), where the combined action results in enhanced bacterial killing compared to either drug alone. This synergy has been demonstrated in vitro and may be clinically relevant for severe infections such as endocarditis or neonatal sepsis when caused by susceptible organisms.
