Benzylpenicillin + metronidazole is a combination of two antibiotics used together primarily for the treatment of severe infections where both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria are suspected or confirmed. Benzylpenicillin (also known as penicillin G) is a natural penicillin antibiotic that acts by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to cell lysis and death, particularly effective against gram-positive cocci. Metronidazole is an antimicrobial agent with potent activity against anaerobic bacteria and certain protozoa; it works by disrupting DNA synthesis in susceptible organisms. This combination is commonly used in clinical settings such as peritonsillar abscesses, where mixed aerobic-anaerobic infections are common[4]. The use of both agents provides broad-spectrum coverage for polymicrobial infections.
