Overview

Benzylpiperazine (BZP) is a synthetic stimulant of the piperazine class, originally developed by Burroughs Wellcome in the early 1970s as a potential antidepressant. However, development was halted after it was found to possess amphetamine-like stimulant properties and a high potential for abuse. BZP acts primarily as a norepinephrine-dopamine releasing agent (NDRA), increasing the synaptic concentrations of these catecholamines by reversing the action of their respective transporters. In the early 2000s, it emerged globally as a recreational "designer drug," often marketed as "party pills" and frequently combined with trifluoromethylphenylpiperazine (TFMPP) to mimic the effects of MDMA. Due to its adverse cardiovascular and neurological effects, BZP has been classified as a controlled substance in many countries. The New Zealand Ministry of Health notably sponsored clinical research to evaluate its impact on driving performance and safety during its period of legal availability.
