Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bepanthen Wund- und Heilsalbe is a topical ointment containing 5% dexpanthenol (provitamin B5), developed by Bayer for the treatment of superficial wounds and skin irritations. Upon application, dexpanthenol is absorbed and converted into pantothenic acid, a crucial component of coenzyme A. This cofactor plays a central role in cellular metabolism, particularly in the Krebs cycle and fatty acid synthesis, which are essential for the repair and regeneration of the skin and mucous membranes. The ointment base also provides an emollient effect, creating a protective barrier that supports the natural healing process by maintaining a moist wound environment and preventing dehydration of the affected area.
