Drug intelligence / Profile preview
M6050C (brand name Bepio) is a topical gel formulation containing 2.5% benzoyl peroxide, developed by Maruho for the treatment of acne vulgaris. Approved in Japan in 2014, it was the first standalone benzoyl peroxide product available in that market. The drug exerts its therapeutic effects through dual mechanisms: it acts as a potent antiseptic by releasing reactive oxygen species (free radicals) that oxidize bacterial proteins in *Cutibacterium acnes*, and it provides keratolytic activity by softening and peeling the stratum corneum to resolve comedones. Because its antibacterial effect is non-specific and oxidative, it carries a lower risk of inducing bacterial resistance compared to traditional topical antibiotics.
