Overview

Beprosone is a potent (Group III) topical corticosteroid developed and marketed by Hoe Pharmaceuticals. Its active ingredient is betamethasone dipropionate at a concentration of 0.064%, which is equivalent to 0.5 mg of betamethasone per gram. As a synthetic glucocorticoid, betamethasone dipropionate binds to cytoplasmic glucocorticoid receptors, subsequently translocating to the nucleus to modulate gene expression. This action results in the induction of lipocortins, which inhibit phospholipase A2, thereby reducing the release of arachidonic acid and the subsequent synthesis of inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Beprosone is indicated for the treatment of various corticosteroid-responsive dermatological conditions, including atopic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, and lupus erythematosus. It is available in both cream and ointment formulations for topical application.
