Beractant is a modified natural pulmonary surfactant derived from bovine lung extract. It contains phospholipids, neutral lipids, fatty acids, and surfactant-associated proteins (such as SP-B and SP-C), with added synthetic dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), tripalmitin, and palmitic acid to standardize its composition. Beractant is administered as an intratracheal suspension for the prevention and treatment of respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) in premature infants whose lungs have not fully developed. Its mechanism of action involves replenishing deficient or dysfunctional endogenous surfactant in the lungs by lowering surface tension on alveolar surfaces during respiration. This stabilizes alveoli against collapse at resting transpulmonary pressures and improves lung compliance and oxygenation[1][2][3][4][5][7].
