Overview
*Berberis aristata*, commonly known as Indian barberry or Daruharidra, is a medicinal shrub native to the Himalayan region of India and Nepal. It is a member of the Berberidaceae family and is highly valued in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Siddha. The plant is a prolific source of protoberberine alkaloids, with berberine being its primary bioactive constituent. Research indicates that *Berberis aristata* extracts possess pleiotropic pharmacological activities, including lipid-lowering, antidiabetic, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects. It is frequently utilized in nutraceutical formulations to manage metabolic syndrome, hypercholesterolemia, and type 2 diabetes by normalizing glucose metabolism and lipid profiles. Furthermore, it has demonstrated potential in oncology for its ability to inhibit cancer cell migration and induce apoptosis in various cell lines, as well as in treating gastrointestinal disorders like chronic diarrhea.
