Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Berberis aristata extract, also known as Indian barberry or tree turmeric extract, is a botanical extract derived from the roots, bark, and stems of the *Berberis aristata* plant. It is highly valued in traditional Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine and is widely used as a dietary supplement and nutraceutical. The primary bioactive constituent of the extract is berberine, a quaternary isoquinoline alkaloid. Berberis aristata extract exhibits a multi-target mechanism of action, primarily characterized by the indirect activation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) via the inhibition of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex I, as well as the direct inhibition of dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4). These pathways contribute to its significant glucose-lowering, lipid-lowering, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective properties. The extract is primarily investigated and used for metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes mellitus, prediabetes, hyperlipidemia, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), as well as mild cognitive impairment.
