Overview

**Berberis vulgaris** is a medicinal plant, commonly known as barberry, widely used in traditional medicine and as a food additive, especially in Iran[1][3]. All parts of the plant (fruit, bark, root, and stem) contain pharmacologically active compounds, including alkaloids such as berberine, oxyacanthine, and berbamine, as well as vitamins (notably vitamin C and vitamin K), triterpenoids, and phenolics[1]. The main mechanisms of action include anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects via suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and induction of T regulatory cells, antioxidation, antihistaminic and anticholinergic effects, and possible calcium channel blockade[1][3]. The plant has demonstrated experimental efficacy in animal models and cell lines for conditions such as cancer, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, bacterial infections, and pain[1][3]. In traditional medicine and homeopathy, it is used for kidney stone pain and various inflammatory conditions[2][4][6].
