Berberis vulgaris extract is a botanical extract derived from the fruit, root, bark, or stem of the Berberis vulgaris (barberry) plant. The main active compound is **berberine**, along with other isoquinoline alkaloids such as berbamine, palmatine, and jatrorrhizine[4]. Berberis vulgaris extract demonstrates multiple pharmacological activities: anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, antihypertensive, hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, hepatoprotective, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antineoplastic[1][3][10]. Mechanisms include inhibition of monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), antioxidant action (elimination of ONOO(-) and NOO(2)(-) radicals), modulation of inflammatory cytokines (inhibition of IL-1, TNF, IFN-γ; stimulation of IL-4, IL-10), induction of regulatory T cells, and increased apoptosis of antigen-presenting cells[1]. It also acts as a choleretic, diuretic, and sedative agent[1][3]. Potential clinical uses investigated include metabolic syndrome, hypercholesterolemia, type 2 diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, hypertension, acne vulgaris, rheumatologic diseases, infectious diseases, and certain cancers[2][3][6][8][9][10][11]. The extract is available primarily as a dietary supplement, sometimes used in traditional medicine and in clinical studies.
