Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Berberol is a patented fixed-dose combination of Berberis aristata (standardized for berberine) and Silybum marianum (standardized for silymarin) developed by PharmExtracta. It is used as a nutraceutical supplement to improve glycemic control, insulin sensitivity, and lipid profiles in patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, or those who are intolerant to statins. Berberine, the active alkaloid from Berberis aristata, acts primarily by activating the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathway, which enhances glucose uptake and lipid metabolism, and by upregulating LDL receptor expression. Silymarin, derived from Silybum marianum, acts as a bioenhancer by inhibiting P-glycoprotein (P-gp) efflux, thereby significantly increasing the intestinal absorption and bioavailability of berberine, while also providing antioxidant and hepatoprotective benefits.
