Overview
Beremagene geperpavec is a topical gene therapy indicated for the treatment of wounds in patients six months of age and older with dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (DEB) caused by mutations in the collagen type VII alpha 1 chain (COL7A1) gene. It is a genetically modified, replication-defective herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) vector engineered to deliver functional copies of the COL7A1 gene directly to skin cells. Upon topical application, it transduces keratinocytes and fibroblasts at wound sites, enabling these cells to produce functional type VII collagen (COL7), which forms anchoring fibrils essential for skin integrity and wound healing. Beremagene geperpavec was developed by Krystal Biotech and is marketed under the brand name Vyjuvek[1][3][4][6][8].
