Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Bergamot essential oil (BEO) is a natural aromatic extract derived from the peel of the bergamot fruit (*Citrus bergamia*). It is primarily utilized as an inhaled aromatherapy intervention for psychiatric conditions, including depression and adolescent mental disorders. BEO contains a complex profile of volatile organic compounds, such as limonene, linalyl acetate, and linalool, which are thought to exert therapeutic effects by modulating GABAergic, serotonergic, and dopaminergic pathways. Additionally, it exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that contribute to neuroprotection and hippocampal neuroplasticity. In clinical research, such as trial NCT05251779, it has been employed as an active comparator to evaluate the efficacy of other volatile oils like Volatile Oil of Cang-Ai (CAVO).
