Beriplast is a topical fibrin sealant and tissue adhesive derived from human plasma, primarily used for hemostasis, tissue sealing, and wound healing across various surgical specialties. Developed by **CSL Behring**, it consists of two primary components that mimic the final stage of the blood coagulation cascade: a fibrinogen concentrate (containing fibrinogen and Coagulation Factor XIII) and a thrombin solution (containing human thrombin and calcium chloride). When these components are mixed upon application, thrombin catalyzes the conversion of fibrinogen into fibrin monomers, which polymerize to form a clot. Coagulation Factor XIII, activated by thrombin in the presence of calcium, then cross-links the fibrin strands to create a stable, insoluble, and adhesive matrix. Many formulations also include aprotinin, a bovine-derived protease inhibitor, to delay the premature degradation of the fibrin clot by plasmin (fibrinolysis).
