Overview

Besifloxacin is a fourth-generation fluoroquinolone antibiotic developed for ophthalmic use, specifically as an eye drop suspension. It is indicated for the topical treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis (pinkeye), an infection of the membrane covering the outside of the eyeballs and inside of the eyelids. Besifloxacin acts by inhibiting two essential bacterial enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are required for DNA replication, transcription, repair, and decatenation during cell division. This dual inhibition impairs bacterial proliferation and survival. The drug was FDA approved in 2009 and is supplied as a 0.6% ophthalmic suspension[1][2][3][4][5][6].
