Overview

Besifloxacin intracanalicular insert (OTX-BSI) is a sustained-release, biodegradable hydrogel-based drug delivery system designed for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis and antimicrobial prophylaxis following ophthalmic surgery. Developed by Ocular Therapeutix, the insert is placed into the inferior canaliculus, where it provides a continuous release of besifloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, over a period of approximately 21 days. Besifloxacin exerts its antibacterial effect by inhibiting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, essential enzymes for bacterial DNA replication and transcription. This single-dose, physician-administered insert is intended to improve therapeutic outcomes by ensuring consistent drug delivery and eliminating the compliance issues associated with self-administered topical eye drops.
