Overview

Beta-2-microglobulin (B2M) siRNA is a small interfering RNA designed to silence the expression of the B2M gene. B2M is the light chain component of the Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) class I molecule, which is essential for the cell-surface expression of HLA class I and antigen presentation to cytotoxic T cells. In the context of oncology research, particularly in pancreatic cancer, B2M siRNA is used to investigate the role of HLA class I components in tumor cell proliferation and migration. Studies have shown that down-regulation of B2M can influence the growth and invasive properties of cancer cells, suggesting that HLA class I molecules may provide a survival or progression advantage to certain tumors beyond their traditional immune functions. While primarily used as a research tool, B2M modulation is also a key strategy in the development of allogeneic cell therapies to reduce immunogenicity.
