Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Beta-acetyldigoxin (β-acetyldigoxin) is a cardiac glycoside and a beta-acetyl derivative of digoxin. It acts as a prodrug that is rapidly and completely deacetylated to digoxin during absorption in the intestinal mucosa, resulting in high oral bioavailability (approximately 90%). Like digoxin, it exerts its therapeutic effects by inhibiting the sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase (Na+/K+-ATPase) pump in cardiac myocytes. This inhibition leads to an increase in intracellular sodium, which subsequently decreases the activity of the sodium-calcium exchanger, raising intracellular calcium levels and enhancing myocardial contractility (positive inotropic effect). It also increases vagal tone, which decreases heart rate (negative chronotropic effect) and slows AV node conduction (negative dromotropic effect). Beta-acetyldigoxin is indicated for the treatment of chronic heart failure (systolic dysfunction) and cardiac arrhythmias, such as atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter.
