Overview

Beta-amyrin is a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenoid compound found in various medicinal plants, including *Protium heptaphyllum*, *Alstonia scholaris*, and *Catharanthus roseus*. It is primarily investigated as a research compound for its broad range of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-fibrotic, and neuroprotective effects. Mechanistically, beta-amyrin has been shown to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and modulate intracellular signaling pathways such as ERK1/2 and GSK-3β, which may contribute to its ability to attenuate cognitive impairment in models of Alzheimer's disease. Additionally, it acts as an agonist for cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 and can modulate Bax-mediated apoptotic pathways. While it has demonstrated efficacy in various animal models for conditions like hepatic fibrosis, atherosclerosis, and tuberculosis, it is not currently developed as a commercial pharmaceutical product by any specific company and remains in the preclinical research stage.
