Overview

**Beta-asarone** is a natural phytochemical (cis-isomer of asarone) found mainly in plants such as *Acorus calamus* and related species. It is classified as an aromatic ether and has the molecular formula C12H16O3. Beta-asarone has been studied for a variety of pharmacological activities, including anticancer, antidepressant, antianxiety, anti-Alzheimer's, anti-Parkinson's, antiepileptic, antihyperlipidemic, antithrombotic, anticholestatic, and radioprotective effects. Recent preclinical studies show that beta-asarone suppresses cancer cell proliferation and metastasis, notably in colon cancer models, in part by modulating gene expression involved in cell cycle, apoptosis, and by activating innate immune responses, such as increased granulocyte colony-stimulating factor and macrophage counts. However, beta-asarone carries significant toxicological risks, including carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, genotoxicity, and teratogenicity. Its oral bioavailability is low and its metabolism is primarily via cytochrome P450 pathways. It is also used as a grain fumigant, insect chemisterilant, and reference standard in herbal product analysis[1][2][3][5].
