Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Beta-carotene is a naturally occurring carotenoid and a precursor to vitamin A (provitamin A) found in many fruits and vegetables. It functions as an antioxidant by scavenging free radicals and protecting against oxidative damage, particularly within cell membranes. Beta-carotene can be converted by the body into retinol (vitamin A), which is essential for vision, immune function, and skin health. Its primary clinical use is to treat or prevent vitamin A deficiency and to reduce photosensitivity in patients with erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP). Beta-carotene also has been studied for its potential effects on cancer risk reduction and immune modulation but with mixed results[1][2][4][5][6].
