Overview
This is a combination supplement containing beta-carotene, vitamin C (ascorbic acid), vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopheryl acetate), and zinc (usually as zinc oxide). It is best known as the original Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) formulation. The primary mechanism of action is antioxidant activity—these ingredients help neutralize free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in tissues. Zinc also plays a role in immune function and cellular metabolism. The AREDS clinical trials demonstrated that this combination can reduce the risk of progression to advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD) in individuals at moderate to high risk[1][4]. It has also been studied for potential effects on cancer prevention, but evidence outside AMD prevention is limited or inconclusive[3][5].
