Overview

Beta-caryophyllene is a natural bicyclic sesquiterpene that occurs widely in nature. It is notable for having a cyclobutane ring and a trans-double bond in a 9-membered ring, both rarities in nature. Beta-caryophyllene functions as a selective non-psychoactive CB2 receptor agonist with a binding affinity of Ki = 155 nM and approximately 60-fold selectivity for CB2 over CB1 receptors. It exhibits potent anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antioxidant properties. Research indicates it may help relieve anxiety and pain, reduce cholesterol, prevent osteoporosis, and treat seizures. It has also shown potential benefits for brain health, including possible protection against Alzheimer's disease, and may have anticancer effects.
