Overview

beta-caryophyllene oxide is a naturally occurring bicyclic sesquiterpene oxide found in essential oils of many plants and is the oxidized derivative of beta-caryophyllene. It exhibits **anticancer**, **antioxidant**, **anti-inflammatory**, **antifungal**, **antibacterial**, and **antiviral** activities[2][3]. Mechanistically, it is a strong inhibitor of **cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A)** enzymes, modulates signaling pathways involved in tumor cell survival and proliferation (including inhibition of PI3K/AKT/mTOR/S6K1), induces apoptosis, reduces cancer cell metastasis and angiogenesis, and upregulates tumor suppressors such as p53 and p21[3]. It is also noted for use in flavoring and fragrances, and is present in GRAS lists for food safety[2].
