Overview

This antigen-specific immunotherapy is being developed by Diamyd Medical, with Johnny Ludvigsson as a key investigator and sponsor, for the treatment and prevention of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) in patients carrying the HLA DR4-DQ8 haplotype. Unlike the company's lead candidate, which targets the GAD65 antigen in HLA DR3-DQ2 positive individuals, this program utilizes a broader set of beta cell antigens, specifically including insulin, to induce immune tolerance. The therapy aims to reprogram the immune system to prevent the autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells, thereby preserving residual insulin production. It is currently in Phase 1 clinical development and is intended for patients across Stages 1, 2, and 3 of the disease who possess the specific genetic marker.
