Overview

Beta-citronellol is a naturally occurring monoterpene found in cannabis and various essential oils, such as rose and geranium oil. In respiratory research, it has demonstrated significant bronchodilatory effects by relaxing pre-contracted airway smooth muscle (ASM) tissues. The mechanism of action involves the inhibition of myosin light chain 20 (pMLC20) phosphorylation, a key process in muscle contraction. Additionally, beta-citronellol has been shown to work cooperatively with beta-2 adrenergic receptor (B2AR) agonists, such as isoproterenol, to enhance airway relaxation. These findings suggest that beta-citronellol may have therapeutic potential as an adjunct treatment for asthma and other obstructive airway diseases.
