Overview
Beta-glucan + chitin-chitosan is a combination of natural polysaccharides used primarily as a dietary supplement and nutraceutical. This compound leverages the bioactive properties of both beta-glucans (notably from fungal or yeast sources) and chitin/chitosan (derived from crustaceans or fungi). The mechanism of action involves fat-binding in the gastrointestinal tract, which can reduce cholesterol absorption and improve lipid profiles. Clinical studies have shown that supplementation with this combination can significantly increase HDL cholesterol levels, improve HDL/total cholesterol ratios, and reduce apolipoprotein B levels in overweight and obese individuals. Effects may vary by sex and baseline LDL cholesterol status[1][2]. Additional reported benefits include appetite regulation (satiety), potential weight loss via reduced energy intake, antioxidant activity, immunomodulation, gut microbiota modulation, anti-inflammatory effects, cardiovascular protection (anti-hypercholesterolemia), hepatoprotection, anti-diabetic effects, detoxification support, antimicrobial activity (antibacterial/antifungal/antiviral), and possible anticancer properties[3][4][6].
