Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Beta-glucans from Saccharomyces cerevisiae are polysaccharides derived from the cell wall of baker’s yeast. These compounds are primarily composed of β(1→3) and β(1→6) glycosidic linkages. They function as biologically active immunomodulators and antioxidants. Mechanistically, they stimulate innate immune responses by binding to pattern recognition receptors such as Dectin‑1/CR3 (complement receptor 3), TLR4 (Toll-like receptor 4), and MMR (macrophage mannose receptor), activating downstream signaling pathways including Raf‑1, Syk, and PI3K[6][9][10]. This leads to enhanced phagocytosis and cytokine production by monocytes/macrophages and natural killer cells. Beta-glucans from S. cerevisiae have demonstrated efficacy in preclinical models for reducing tumor growth via trained immunity mechanisms[4][6][9], antioxidant effects through Nrf2/HO‑1 pathway activation[10], wound healing promotion[2][7], modulation of gut microbiota in inflammatory bowel disease[7], cholesterol reduction[5], glycemic control improvement[3], and potential adjuvant use in cancer immunotherapy or vaccine delivery systems[4]. They are widely used as dietary supplements for cardiovascular health support and immune enhancement.
