Overview

Sequential dual growth factor therapy developed by the University of California, Irvine, for the treatment of acute ischemic stroke. The regimen involves the administration of beta-human chorionic gonadotropin (beta-hCG) to stimulate the proliferation of endogenous neural stem cells, followed by erythropoietin (EPO) to promote the differentiation of these cells into functional neurons. This restorative approach aims to repair brain tissue rather than just limiting initial damage. A Phase 2a safety trial (BETAS study) demonstrated the safety of this sequential intramuscular and intravenous dosing schedule when initiated 24-48 hours after stroke onset.
