Beta-hydroxybutyrate ester is a small molecule ketone ester compound, specifically (R)-3-hydroxybutyl (R)-3-hydroxybutyrate, developed to induce exogenous ketosis without the need for a strict ketogenic diet. Upon ingestion, the ester is rapidly hydrolyzed in the gut and liver to release D-beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) and (R)-1,3-butanediol, the latter of which is further metabolized into BHB. BHB serves as an alternative, energy-efficient fuel source for the brain and heart and acts as a signaling molecule modulating inflammation and oxidative stress. The compound was developed by Dr. Richard Veech and has been studied by Osaka Gas Chemicals Co. Ltd. It is being investigated for various conditions including neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease), cardiovascular diseases, diabetic cardiomyopathy, metabolic disorders, and cognitive enhancement. Additionally, recent research has explored its potential in treating alcohol use disorder by reducing alcohol intake and alleviating withdrawal symptoms.
