Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Beta-hydroxybutyrate ketone salt (also known as BHB ketone salt or exogenous ketone salt) is a dietary supplement and nutraceutical formulation of the ketone body beta-hydroxybutyrate bound to mineral salts such as sodium, potassium, calcium, or magnesium. It is used to induce exogenous ketosis, providing an alternative energy source to glucose for the brain, heart, and skeletal muscle without requiring strict carbohydrate restriction. Beta-hydroxybutyrate acts as an endogenous agonist of the hydroxycarboxylic acid receptor 2 (HCAR2/GPR109A) and free fatty acid receptor 3 (FFAR3/GPR41), and functions as an inhibitor of Class I histone deacetylases (HDACs). It also exerts anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammasome. Beta-hydroxybutyrate ketone salts are being investigated in clinical trials for various indications, including the prevention of muscle wasting in critically ill patients, migraine prophylaxis, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sleep quality improvement, and hypertension management.
