Overview

beta-resorcylic acid (β-RA) is a small molecule and an analog of the precursor for Coenzyme Q (CoQ) biosynthesis. It is currently being researched as a potential therapeutic for obesity and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). The drug's mechanism involves the normalization of mitochondrial CoQ metabolism in white adipose tissue and the activation of hepatic lipid metabolism through an HNF4α/LXR-dependent transcriptomic pathway. In preclinical models of diet-induced obesity, oral administration of β-RA has been shown to induce significant weight loss, mitigate adipose tissue hypertrophy, prevent hepatic steatosis, and improve glucose homeostasis by reducing the insulin/glucagon ratio and gastric inhibitory peptide (GIP) levels.
