beta-sodium glycerophosphate is an organic phosphate salt primarily utilized in regenerative medicine and clinical nutrition. It serves as a source of organic phosphorus and a critical substrate for the enzyme alkaline phosphatase (ALP). In the context of tissue engineering and bone biology, it is a standard supplement used to induce the osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells; ALP-mediated hydrolysis of the beta-glycerophosphate molecule releases inorganic phosphate ions, which subsequently facilitate the mineralization of the extracellular matrix into hydroxyapatite. Furthermore, it is widely employed as a temperature-sensitive gelation agent in chitosan-based hydrogels, enabling the creation of injectable scaffolds for cartilage repair and localized drug delivery. In clinical medicine, the sodium glycerophosphate family is used as a parenteral supplement to prevent and treat hypophosphatemia, providing a stable source of phosphate for patients receiving intravenous nutrition.
