Beta tricalcium phosphate + hydroxyapatite (βTCP/HA) is a biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramic used as a bone substitute material in periodontal regenerative surgery. It consists of a mixture of hydroxyapatite (HA), which provides a stable, long-term scaffold for bone growth due to its low resorption rate, and beta-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), which is more soluble and promotes faster bone turnover. In a clinical trial led by Ohio State University, this material was evaluated for its efficacy in treating mandibular class II furcation defects in patients with chronic periodontitis, both as a standalone filling material and in combination with Enamel Matrix Derivative (EMD). The treatment aims to achieve clinical attachment gain and reduce probing pocket depths by providing a framework for new bone formation.
