Overview

Betacellulin (BTC) is a recombinant protein and a member of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family that acts as an agonist for the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR/ErbB1) and ErbB4. It is being investigated as a regenerative, secretome-derived therapy for post-ischemic brain repair and neural regeneration following ischemic stroke. In preclinical models, intranasal or osmotic pump administration of recombinant betacellulin promotes neural stem/progenitor cell activation, neurogenesis, and angiogenesis, leading to reduced infarct size and improved behavioral recovery.
