Overview

Betaine + butyrate is a combination drug, often synthesized as an ionic liquid (betainium butyrate), designed to improve the delivery of hydrophobic therapeutic agents while providing intrinsic anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory benefits. Betaine (trimethylglycine) serves as a methyl donor and osmoprotectant, while butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid (SCFA), acts as a potent histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor and an agonist for G protein-coupled receptors such as GPR41 and GPR43. In preclinical studies, this combination has been used to enhance the oral bioavailability of phytochemicals like glycyrol and has shown synergistic activity against colorectal cancer by inducing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. It is also studied for its potential to modulate the gut microbiome and improve intestinal barrier function.
