Betaine aldehyde is a small molecule and a quaternary ammonium ion that serves as an intermediate in the metabolic pathway converting choline to betaine. It is involved in the metabolism of amino acids such as glycine, serine, and threonine. In humans and other organisms (including Escherichia coli and Aspergillus), it is produced during choline oxidation. Betaine aldehyde is converted to glycine betaine by the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase (EC 1.2.1.3). It has not been approved for pharmaceutical use but may be used experimentally or as a research chemical[1][2][4][5][6][8].
