Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Betamethasone + fusidic acid is a topical combination drug containing two active ingredients: betamethasone (usually as the valerate ester), a potent synthetic corticosteroid with anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties; and fusidic acid, an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis. This combination is primarily used to treat inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema or dermatitis when these are also infected by bacteria sensitive to fusidic acid. Betamethasone reduces redness, swelling and itching by blocking the production of pro-inflammatory chemical messengers (prostaglandins), while fusidic acid prevents bacterial growth by inhibiting essential protein synthesis in susceptible organisms[1][2][4][6][9].
