Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Betamethasone + gentamicin + tolnaftate + clioquinol is a topical pharmaceutical combination used to treat skin infections, particularly those involving mixed bacterial and fungal pathogens. The formulation combines four active ingredients with complementary mechanisms of action: - **Betamethasone** is a potent corticosteroid that exerts anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and vasoconstrictive effects by blocking the production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins. - **Gentamicin** is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, providing broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms. - **Tolnaftate** is an antifungal agent that disrupts fungal cell membrane function, inhibiting the growth of dermatophytes responsible for superficial mycoses. - **Clioquinol (iodochlorhydroxyquinoline)** acts as both an antifungal and antibacterial agent by interfering with microbial DNA replication and enzyme systems. This combination is indicated for inflammatory dermatoses complicated by secondary infection or when such infection risk exists. It may be prescribed for conditions like chronic dermatitis, eczema with superinfection, intertrigo, tinea pedis/cruris/corporis (fungal infections), impetigo, neurodermatitis, paronychia, minor infected wounds or burns[1][2][4][6].
