Overview
Betamethasone dipropionate is a synthetic glucocorticoid corticosteroid with potent anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties. It is classified as a "super high potency" topical corticosteroid and is used primarily to treat inflammatory skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis. The drug works by inhibiting multiple inflammatory cytokines and suppressing the migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, thereby reducing inflammation and immune responses in the skin. Betamethasone dipropionate is available in various topical formulations including creams, ointments, lotions, gels, sprays, and foams. Its enhanced fat solubility allows for greater skin penetration. The primary indication for this medication is relief of redness, itching, swelling or discomfort caused by corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses. It may also be used in combination with vitamin D analogs (such as calcipotriene) for plaque psoriasis.
