Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Betamethasone valerate + calcipotriol is a fixed-dose combination medication used for the treatment of plaque psoriasis. It combines two active ingredients with complementary mechanisms of action: betamethasone valerate (a corticosteroid) and calcipotriol (a vitamin D analog). Betamethasone valerate reduces inflammation, redness, itching, and swelling by blocking the production of inflammatory chemical messengers. Calcipotriol works by slowing down the excessive growth of skin cells that build up to form psoriasis plaques. The combination provides greater efficacy than either component used alone, with a more favorable safety profile as calcipotriol can mitigate the skin-thinning effects of betamethasone, while betamethasone can reduce the skin irritation sometimes caused by calcipotriol.
