Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Betamethasone valerate 0.1% cream (commonly marketed under brand names such as Betagalen or Betnovate) is a potent (Class III) topical corticosteroid indicated for the relief of inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid-responsive dermatoses, including atopic dermatitis (eczema), plaque psoriasis, and contact dermatitis. As a synthetic glucocorticoid receptor agonist, betamethasone valerate binds to intracellular glucocorticoid receptors, leading to the translocation of the ligand-receptor complex into the cell nucleus. There, it modulates gene transcription, inhibiting the synthesis of pro-inflammatory cytokines and mediators while upregulating anti-inflammatory proteins. This action effectively reduces erythema, swelling, and itching at the site of application. Originally developed by legacy companies such as Schering-Plough and Glaxo, betamethasone valerate 0.1% cream is widely available as a generic formulation and is manufactured by various pharmaceutical companies, including GALENpharma.
