Overview

Betamipron is a small molecule compound, chemically known as N-benzoyl-β-alanine, used primarily as a renal protectant in combination with the carbapenem antibiotic panipenem. Its main function is to inhibit the uptake of panipenem into the renal tubule, thereby reducing nephrotoxicity associated with panipenem therapy. Betamipron acts by competitively inhibiting anionic transporters in the kidney, similar to probenecid. It has very low toxicity in mammals and is not itself an antibacterial agent but serves to enhance the safety profile of panipenem-based treatments for severe bacterial infections[1][2][6][7].
