betaxolol

Betaxolol is a cardioselective beta-blocker (beta-1 adrenergic antagonist) used primarily to treat hypertension and open-angle glaucoma. It works by selectively blocking beta-1 adrenergic receptors in the heart, leading to decreased heart rate, cardiac output, and blood pressure. When administered ophthalmically, it reduces intraocular pressure by decreasing aqueous humor production in the eye. Unlike non-selective beta-blockers, betaxolol has minimal effect on beta-2 receptors and thus a lower risk of bronchospasm. It does not exhibit intrinsic sympathomimetic or significant membrane-stabilizing activity. Approved uses include essential hypertension (oral), open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension (ophthalmic), with additional use in chronic stable angina and post-myocardial infarction.
